Have you heard? Tramway is changing

Tramway are making alterations to their building in preparation for the arrival of new neighbours, Scottish Ballet, whose headquarters will be built on the ground adjacent to Tramway. The redevelopment will be undertaken in stages, running consecutively from September 07 though to the spring of 09. Much of the work will take place behind the scenes and will cause as little disruption as possible. The next event scheduled at Tramway is the National Review of Live Art in February 2008. It will be the venue's 20th Anniversary year so look out for a bigger, bolder programme of events throughout this period. You can contact Jade Graham, House Manager at jade.graham@cs.glasgow.org if you have any comments or queries.

Talking Tourism

Material Skirl
Pipers and drummers from around the world have contributed £10 million to Glasgow ’s economy. Around 8000 musicians visited the city from virtually every corner of the globe as part of the World Pipe Band Championships in August. More than 50 of the bands travelled from overseas, including Pakistan, Brazil, Eastern Europe, Oman, Sweden, America, Canada, Australia and New Zealand to take part in the prestigious competition on Glasgow Green.

Bid to boost tourism in the Merchant City
A campaign is being launched to bring more tourists to Glasgow's Merchant City. Members of a new agency, The Merchant City Tourism and Marketing Group, believes that the area has the potential to attract similar numbers of visitors as Dublin's Temple Bar or Stockholm's Old Town. It has secured a £25,000 grant from Visit Scotland and Scottish Enterprise Glasgow to help promote the area.

Events group names new man at the top
A key post has been filled at national events organisation, EventScotland. Paul Bush has been appointed as chief operating officer at the agency. Paul’s experience comes from an extensive career in sport, where he worked as a coach, development officer, team, manager, chief executive and previously as deputy at EventScotland. Chief Executive, Phillip Riddle said, “Events are crucial to Scotland ’s tourism industry, attracting visitors from home and abroad and making a significant contribution to our national economy”.

Chosen One...

Eastwood Park Theatre’s autumn/winter programme will feature an evening with Rebus creator Ian Rankin and Rick Stein. While the team was discussing the promotion of events it was mentioned that there was to be an exhibition by local artist Ed Hunter. The office wag then piped up: “Aye, I’ve heard of him – he used to work in a recruitment agency”.

‘Glamorous, sexy, funny and dangerous. A triumph’ Evening Standard

First seen in 2000, winning the Evening Standard Award for Musical Event of the Year, Matthew Bourne's The Car Man is loosely based on Bizet’s popular opera and has one of the most thrilling and instantly recognisable scores in New Adventures’ repertoire. The familiar 19th Century Spanish cigarette factory becomes a greasy garage-diner in 1960’s America where the dreams and passions of a small-town are shattered by the arrival of a handsome stranger. Fuelled by heat and desire, the inhabitants are driven into an unstoppable spiral of greed, lust, betrayal and revenge. Find out more...

And finally...
DJ Mark Radcliffe was panicking that his recent Radio 2 broadcast, featuring KT Tunstall live from the Old Fruitmarket in Glasgow, would die a death as, 10 minutes before starting, the venue was less than half full. Radcliffe went on stage and exhorted the small crowd to be as exuberant as possible, telling them: "Make a lot of noise and then it sounds like we have a really exciting radio programme going on. If I'd known it was going to be this exclusive I'd have sold hundreds of tickets on the black market." Radcliffe though had merely underestimated the average Scottish crowd's desire to have a drink before the turn comes on. Within minutes of KT walking on stage, the hall was packed out as the drouthy crowd timed their own entrance to perfection.

Don't forget, C21 News is for you, about you and written by you! We want to hear what you've got to say about what's going on with you and your colleagues at your venue or organisation. Have you taken advantage of your ArtsPass yet - what did you think of what you saw? What training have you attended recently and how useful did you find it?  We'd welcome your reviews, comments and recommendations to feature in the next edition of C21 News.

Please send your contributions to Nina at GGA.

Until next time - best wishes
