Top acts help SECC rock to £2.1m profit
The Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre generated a pre-tax profit of £2.1 million – almost £1m more than the previous year. The venue has hosted a total of 233 concerts, conferences and other events over the last year, with the bulk of the extra revenue coming from the tens of thousands of music fans who flocked to the riverside complex for sell out concerts. Profits were also boosted by major events which saw delegates jetting in to Glasgow from around the world.

Staff News

NYOS
We would like to extend a warm welcome to Sara Harrison who has joined NYOS as Marketing Coordinator. Sara's role involves working closely with host venues to set up box office, designing promotional materials, press relations and all the usual marketing tasks that we all know and love! Sara gives us a bit of background information on herself and her new role...

"I'd really like to think a little bit more strategically about the future of NYOS - especially as we have a new Chief Executive - however finding the time looks like it is going to be difficult - I was thrown in at the deep end with only a couple of weeks before my first concert - NYOS Futures in collaboration with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra at Glasgow City Halls on 14 October (plug!). It's very interesting for me, as I am new to the world of classical music, having come from more of a visual arts/cross art form background - my first job in arts marketing was for Forma Arts and Media - an art and new media producers based in Newcastle and producing arts events/exhibitions and cross artform performances worldwide but I'm looking forward to all the challenges that come with a new role!"

We wish Sara all the best of luck in her new position!

ACVMS
The Association of Cultural Venue Managers (ACVMS) held their annual free training day on Thursday 20th September. This was a great opportunity to meet and exchange ideas with other front line staff working throughout Scottish theatre. Jade Graham, Front of House Manager, Tramway, gave C21 some feedback...

"The training day covered fire safety and regulations as well as current licensing law changes and how they will affect front line staff. We also had an inspirational session held by GGA’s Julie Tait on Customer Care. Our keynote speakers from the Nottingham Playhouse passed on some invaluable tips to Box Office and Front of House staff on caring for the public at every point of a trip to the theatre. Two of their management team talked us through the venues customer service strategy and how its implementation led to them winning the 2007 Most Welcoming Theatre award."

Many Scottish venues are already members of ACVMS, if you are not a member and would like to join, or just find out more about what they do please email jade.graham@csglasgow.org or telephone 0141 422 2023.

Talking Tourism

Edinburgh and Glasgow in top five UK tourism cities
Edinburgh and Glasgow have been named among the UK’s top five tourist destinations for the third year in a row in a survey by one of the worlds most exclusive travel magazines. The capital was voted second while Glasgow made it into fourth place in this year’s Conde Nast Traveller survey.

Conferences & Events Fuel Hotel Boom
2,400 new hotel rooms are planned for Glasgow in the next four years to meet demands from the city's booming conference, events and leisure travel markets. The news was released by Glasgow City Marketing Bureau (GCMB) as it unveiled a new advertising creative highlighting the increasing range of hotel accommodation available and how the city is easier to get to than ever before as new flight routes open up. Carrying the strapline "arriving now", the city's glossy new adverts show successful travellers flying over Glasgow city centre and pictured outside of a luxury hotel.

Going the extra mile...

Do Scotland’s tourism, leisure and arts venues give good service? The people at www.extramilescotland.co.uk decided to find out. They created a website that acts as a platform so that users could record their positive experiences. Gilbert Summers kindly agreed to give C21 News the inside scoop…

“It’s the easiest thing in the world to moan about poor service. The Scots can be a bit negative. We talk ourselves down. But it's not that hard to find businesses and venues going the extra mile. Admittedly, the results so far suggest that businesses in rural areas seem to be delivering that extra bit of service – but we reckon the website provides a platform of opportunity for city venues that do that bit extra for their customers."

"Extra Mile Scotland thinks that it’s the first impression that makes the customer feel good about a place. Orientation is crucial. Nobody likes to enter a new place and stand around unsure of where to go. Take the issue of picking up pre-ordered tickets at an arts venue you’ve never been too before. Which queue to join? Are there informative notices to help? Are there easily identifiable, friendly and approachable staff to orientate the new customer? Get it right and you’ve got a great start to a new relationship and a good chance of creating a regular customer."

"Interaction and engagement are buzz-words in the tourism industry. They refer to the fact that customers (home-grown or otherwise) like to be acknowledged and feel that their needs are important. That’s why, for example, there’s an extra mile on the website acknowledging the fact that a waitress, while clearing plates away, asked the customers what they were doing that evening and did they know there was a great concert on locally. She didn’t have to say anything, but instead took the trouble to engage. And she recommended a local arts venue as well. Right away, there‘s a thought for arts venues. Do the staff at the hotels and B&B's in the vicinity know your programme? Would the concierge recommend you?"

What's on: Kremerata Baltica
Where: City Halls, Glasgow
When: Wednesday 17th October 2007
ArtsPass Offer: 2 for 1 tickets (normally £12 - £20)

The Kremerata Baltica provide a unique start to an international season. Well-respected Latvian violinist Gidon Kremer conducts his Grammy award-winning orchestra of young people, from three neighbouring countries, on their first visit to Glasgow. As an artist with great vision and ambition, Kremer quickly recognised the orchestra's potential after establishing it in 1997. He has been able to transform it into a realisation of his belief that music can overcome all barriers of language and culture. Gidon Kremer has championed the work of contemporary composers and the programme includes a new piece by Arvo Part. Passacaglia for violin, vibraphone and strings was dedicated by Part to Kremer as a birthday present this year.

"Mr Kremer, leading his fine young ensemble of players, remains one of the truly interesting musicians among us today" - The New York Times
