The Bridge wins top architecture awards
The Bridge Arts Centre in Easterhouse (alongside 2 other Scottish buildings) has won the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) Award. The Awards are run in Scotland by the RIBA's sister organisation, the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (RIAS). The project was particularly commended by the jury for its commitment to access issues and a holistic approach to the briefing and commissioning process. They admired its ability to "lift the spirit of all who engage with it". The jury summed up their impressions by describing The Bridge as an example of "urban regeneration at its most powerful". The Bridge will now go forward to the next round of Awards, the RIBA National Awards, the winners will be announced at the end of June 07. In addition to the RIBA award, the architects who designed The Bridge, Gareth Hoskins Architects, took home 2 awards for The Bridge from the recent Scottish Design Awards. Jackie Shearer, Arts Manager, Platform at The Bridge said: "It's amazing how communities really can be uplifted by inspirational design and architecture. In its first few months, The Bridge has attracted over 250,000 visitors who engage in all sorts of things - from library visits and swimming to dance classes, concerts and theatre performances. The Bridge, in a short time, has already proven its place within the community and we're looking forward to bigger and more dynamic things in the future."

Coaching Tip from Lynne O'Neil: Hit Your Happy Buttons
Do you know what makes you feel good? Do you practice it every day?
If you find yourself saying to yourself or others 'I feel tired/stressed/bored/ down'... then think of what will make you feel happy/excited/ good... and do it! Get out of your chair, make the call, just do it. What do you need? Take some time today and think about what you absolutely need and figure out how you will give yourself it. Start right now.
Human beings are learning machines, but need to practice feeling good. So trick your mind into feeling good - put on some up music, dance, smile. Our brain pays attention to cues from the rest of our body to determine our moods and emotions, like a switch, smiling can actually change your mood.
Industry News
Black Watch to invade US with national theatre group
The National Theatre of Scotland is to tour abroad for the first time, playing Broadway in New York and Los Angeles. NTS is to take the award-winning Black Watch and its family show Wolves in the Walls to the US. The tour marks a new stage in the development of NTS. Artistic Director, Vicky Featherstone, said it is now ready to perform one of its prime roles, as a cultural ambassador for Scottish theatre abroad. The tour is backed by £195,000 from the Scottish Executive and Culture Minister, Linda Fabiani, said it would "attract new audiences to Scottish cultural life". Ahead of the US tour, Black Watch will be performed as part of the opening celebrations of the Scottish Parliament at the end of June. Find out more...
Remaining in the news, NTS's Black Watch has already won a clutch of awards, including the South Bank Show Award for Theatre, a Scotsman Fringe First and a Herald Angel. Now it has more trophies for the cabinet winning in four categories at this year's Critics Awards for Theatre in Scotland (CATS). The play won Best Ensemble, Best Production and Best Technical. John Tiffany was awarded Best Director. Black Watch, written by Gregory Burke, is based on interviews conducted with former members of the famous Scottish regiment. It opened at last year's Edinburgh Festival Fringe to universal acclaim and has been described as the defining play of the Iraq war. The acclaimed theatre production Black Watch has also been filmed by the BBC and will be broadcast alongside a documentary about the show. The production was filmed by the BBC during its recent run in Dingwall and is due to go out later this year.
Other award winners at the recent CATS, held at Pitlochry Festival Theatre, included Meg Fraser who won Best Actress as Martha Meirer in the Citizens' production, Tom Fool.

Scottish festival for Highlands & Islands announced
A new theatre and arts festival and forum, Dràma Na h-Alba (translated from Gaelic as 'the drama of Scotland'), is to be held biennially in the Scottish Highlands and Islands. The first event, DNA2007, is to take place this October in Inverness. Translated from the Gaelic as the drama of Scotland, Dràma Na h-Alba has been announced by the chair of the Highlands and Islands Theatre Network, Ian Brown, chair of the Highlands and Islands Theatre Network said: “Dràma Na h-Alba is an example of strength of theatre provision in the Highlands and Islands. I think many people would be surprised to learn that 26 different organisations go to make up the Highlands and Islands Theatre Network, which is behind the festival.” This autumn’s festival is not only a celebration of the region’s theatre, but it also gives its theatre practitioners a forum to meet with those from Sweden, Ireland, North America and other parts of the United Kingdom. Brown points out that the link with Sweden is particularly strong, with Inverness being as close to Stockholm as it is to London. A provisional programme of more than 60 performances, workshops and networking events will take place in venues in and around Inverness between October 18 and 22. Read more...

Festival goers go green
Visitors to some of Scotland’s biggest festivals are being encouraged to go green this summer by planning their trip using the country’s first ever interactive tourism e-brochure. VisitScotland’s new Events and Festivals online brochure is being sent to over one and a half million potential festival goers around the UK and has the potential to reach an audience closer to two million. The high tech move will save enough paper to cover the length of the entire UK coastline which is over 17,500* kilometres long. 40 percent of all visitors to the UK take in a festival during a short break. Scotland’s festival scene is second to none and the new e-brochure showcases the best of the fests including the Edinburgh International and Fringe Festivals, the Outsider, Connect, the Hebridean Celtic Festival and Piping Live. VisitScotland’s Product Manager for Culture, Yvette Kerr, said: “We know that more and more visitors are turning to the internet when it comes to planning a trip to Scotland and we need to respond to their changing needs. By using the latest technology we can reach millions of potential visitors in a fast, effective and environmentally friendly way to show them that Scotland’s a must visit, must return festival destination.”
For more information, visit the e-brochure for yourself at www.visitscotland.com/eventsandfestivals. Visitors to the site can enter a competition to win a money can’t buy prize to the Edinburgh festivals.

Scottish tourism statistics 2006
Tourism statistics for 2006 show strong growth in the volume and value of international tourism to Scotland. Scotland has also maintained its share of the domestic tourism market in a challenging year, which has seen the number of UK visitors holidaying at home decrease across the UK. Building on dramatic growth over the last few years,
-
the revenue from international tourism to Scotland increased by 17 per cent to £1.4 billion in 2006
-
the number of international visitors also increased by 12 per cent to 2.7 million
-
the number of visitors to Scottish visitor attractions increased by 6 per cent in 2006
-
occupancy levels remained steady, with hotel room occupancy remaining at 63 per cent for the second year
Spanish fans give city hotels a record month
Latest figures show Glasgow hotels’ average occupancy rate peaked at 84% during May 07, as 27,000 Spaniards jetted in for the Uefa Cup Final at Hampden. Two major conferences also boosted the hotel industry’s performance, ensuring the biggest rise since records began seven years ago.
Changing worlds & global markets – the implication for Scottish Tourism
The growth in the economic power of Eastern countries including China, India and Turkey will have a significant impact on Scotland and its tourism industry over the coming years. The Future Foundation forecasts that international arrivals to Scotland from these emerging markets will grow at twice the pace of mature markets. This will bring opportunities for tourism businesses as well as driving a need for more tour guides with specialist language skills and increasing demand for translated audio tours of visitor attractions. The growing middle class in these emerging markets will drive demand for luxury breaks in Scotland, with opportunities for accommodation providers, retailers and activity operators.
A granny attending her granddaughter's seventh birthday party was delighted when the little one announced that she and her brother had rehearsed a little duet that they were going to perform for the guests. "How wonderful and old-fashioned," thought granny. She was brought swiftly back to the present, though, when her granddaughter then announced: "Before we start, ladies and gentlemen, could you please make sure that all mobile phones are switched off. Thank you."

Last year, the city was in 60th place. Analysing the cost of 200 items including housing, transport, food, clothing, household goods and entertainment, the findings are used by some of the world’s leading multinational companies when considering where to set up offices.
