West End Festival
GGA was recently commissioned to carry out research with West End Festival goers. Questionnaires were circulated to attenders and reporting is underway.
Glasgow International Piping Festival
This year's Piping Live! takes place from 7 - 13 August. Now in its third year, the event is growing in popularity and GGA has been asked to evaluate the economic impact of the city's newest piping festival.
WASPS Artists' Studios
Following desk research to evaluate current Open Studios Weekend attenders, GGA will collaborate with Wasps to complete a national marketing plan for this autumn's event.
Classical music provision in the city
Tim Baker and Roger Tomlinson have been appointed by Glasgow City Council to carry out a study that looks at orchestral provision in the city, collaborating with GGA where appropriate. The research is examining levels of attendance and considering issues such as pricing, marketing, programming, timing, and forward planning. Senior representatives from each of the organisations involved in the study recently met at GGA's offices to discuss findings and inform the final report.
GGA Members’ Reference Group meeting
Thank you to those members who came along to the GGA Members’ Reference Group meeting on 2 June – very much appreciated, particularly as it was Friday afternoon and the sunniest day of the year so far! Speed Networking and Intelligence Service
WWW: Write Well on the Web
Ben Braber from bbmc Goodword revealed how to connect with on-line audiences whilst keeping your website content readable and engaging. Packed with lots of practical exercises, this is what delegates said at the end of last month's session:
“I thought the most useful bits were really practical e.g. rewriting our own organisation’s home page with the tips in mind. It helped me focus on who is actually visiting our website and why. Also networking with other people facing similar issues - it’s always beneficial to be able to take time out and chat about things in a professional capacity.”
“Since the workshop I have already rewritten text on the home page and various other bits of the website to make it more user friendly and less like an annual report! I'm looking at ways to make it more exciting and user focused.”

Ambassadors Theatre Group go ENTA
The Ambassadors Theatre Group (ATG) has confirmed that they are to install ENTA from Galathea STS in all 24 venues in the UK. Now the largest theatre management group in the West End, London, and second largest management of touring theatres in the UK, ATG are also major producers so they can bring the vertical integration of commissioning, mounting, presenting and touring shows.
City Halls attract 100,000 visitors
Glasgow’s City Halls and Old Fruitmarket are being hailed as a roaring success after attracting 100,000 visitors in their first 6 months of business. Refurbished at a cost of £15million, the multi-purpose site in the heart of the Merchant City now houses 3 concert venues, an education centre, bar and café.
National Theatre is a high-flier with first-year awards success
The new National Theatre of Scotland (NTS) dominated the national critics' awards yesterday despite being in its first year. The play Roam which was staged at Edinburgh Airport claimed the overall best production award at the Critics Awards for Theatre in Scotland, hosted and funded by the city of Dundee. NTS picked up a total of six awards of the 10 on offer after 11 of its works were nominated for the judges' consideration. The Citizens' Theatre also won two awards for Best Actress (Cara Kelly) and Best Director (Gregory Thompson) for its production of Brian Friel’s 1994 play Molly Sweeny.
Just the ticket? Hooked on cardboard?
The pressure is on managers of venues everywhere to revise their ticketing practices as major organisations move to adopt paperless ticketing. Ticketmaster is already claiming that large proportions of its online purchasers are choosing print-at-home tickets. With the added advantage of being able to add vouchers for parking and catering offers as well as space for advertising on the print-outs, is this the future of ticketing?
Ad break at curtain up
Live action advertisements in the theatre have been tested out in Dublin and on Broadway. The first such event was commissioned by Visit London and was staged as an argument about a trip to the capital city and its various attractions. Theatre management staff and Visit London marketers are waiting to see what audience reaction is before taking it further.

Public Media Lab at the CCA
New Media Scotland in partnership with CCA, Your Machines and OpenLab are developing a new place for people interested in things like free-software, circuit bending, hardware hacking, computer recycling, streaming, audio/video editing, and micro radio to meet, use equipment, share and disseminate skills and ideas. To get things started, the CCA in Glasgow has donated space and some equipment for interested locally-run groups and individuals to use and help create this city-centre new media/hack lab. If you have any ideas for activities to happen there, have skills/equipment to share or have something you are keen to learn, or would just like more info, get in touch with labinfo@yourmachines.org
Pick a good cause as you buy a lottery ticket
A pilot scheme will give people who play the national lottery a say in the allocation of cash grants. Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell has announced that lottery players in two trial areas would be asked to vote for their favourite local causes when they buy a ticket. The move follows criticism of the allocation of funds to projects like salsa dancing classes for unfit accountants and a private gym for staff at Manchester United. Up to five projects in the pilot areas will compete for grants of up to £50,000 in the Your Pound, Your Choice initiative, being launched in August. People will be asked, when they purchase tickets, to tick a box to vote for their preferred cause. For every £1 ticket, 28p is donated to good causes.
Customer Service - Travelodge reaches for the stars
Travelodge customers will be seeing stars in the future as some staff members’ name badges will also display their zodiac sign. The move comes after executives of the nationwide hotel chain asked for ideas on how workers could appear less severe and approachable.

9pm shopping all week in city centre revamp
Shoppers will soon be able to enjoy late night shopping in Glasgow five days a week as city centre outlets try to compete with out-of-town malls. Buchanan Galleries and the St Enoch Centre are spearheading a scheme to tempt shoppers away form Braehead and Glasgow Fort. Under the plans, dozens of stores would open till 9pm on weekdays in a bid to resurrect the retail fortunes of the city centre.
Glasgow’s big earners are hit by debt crisis
