Staff/Department News
On the move...
New Director
The Tron is delighted to announce the appointment of Gregory Thompson as the theatre’s new Director. An experienced theatre Director, Gregory is currently directing Henry VIII in Stratford as part of the RSC’s Complete Works Festival, although he is probably most familiar to you for his recent productions of Molly Sweeny and Romeo & Juliet at the Citizens’ Theatre. On his appointment Gregory, who will take up his new position in October, said: “I'm delighted to be coming to the Tron at such an exciting time for Scottish theatre. The Tron is a place for theatre that is arresting, innovative and fun and I hope to continue with the practice of welcoming audiences to the best work whether made in Glasgow, Scotland or elsewhere.”
Off to pastures new…
At the end of the summer season, the Tron was sad to bid a fond farewell to Sales Manager, Kathryn Bradley. Kathryn had been with the Tron for four years and was a very valued and active member of the team. She has left to take up the position of Marketing and Programming Manager at the Custom’s House in South Shields. Chris Amos has been appointed as the new Box Office Manager. He comes to the Tron from macrobert.
Congratulations to Martine Myrup from CCA Box Office for the launch of her new book Peculiar Flights. Launched as part of CCA’s open day on Saturday 26 August, the book is inspired by work Martine developed during a 14 week residency at Hospitalfield.
Celebrities a go go…
The Tron is 25 years young this year and as part of the celebrations they’ve invited back a host of celebrities to share their Tron memories in an intimate In Conversation series. You’d better act fast if you want to get up close and personal with Alan Cumming or Bobby Carlyle as tickets are selling out fast.
Log on to the Tron website to find out more.
The Arches will celebrate its 15th birthday with five weeks of experimental and avant-garde music.
Kirstin Innes (Press & Publicity Manager at the Arches) looks back at the history of the Glasgow arts venue and club.
"In 1991, Andy Arnold, a theatre director, received the keys to the huge, disused space underneath Glasgow’s Central Station. He was fascinated by the possibilities of the space as a permanent venue for experimental work. After being approached by local promoters Slam, he realised that the space would work equally well as a night club, so began putting on regular weekend events. Fifteen years later, and the Arches – with Arnold still at the helm – has come to occupy an essential, unique place in Scotland’s cultural scene. Every Friday and Saturday night the old brick walls shake to deep, fat basslines and drip with the sweat of a thousand-odd up for it hedonists. A poll of 600 international DJs recently placed the venue in the top ten clubs in the world. However, you can also find experimental theatre happening in the basement corridors, performance installations in the toilets, gigs going off in the archways and young artists deep in discussion at the bar. 15 Years, 2 Fingers – a five week festival of all of those things - celebrates the Arches’ determinedly non-conformist ethos. Top clubs, great gigs, exciting visual art and a lot of theatre: Arches LIVE showcases the best emergent work around, Belly of the Beast is a dark mini-season of physical work, and then there’s Spend A Penny, a theatre show in the venue toilets…"
The events will run from 21 September to 29 October. For more information on the birthday celebrations log on to www.thearches.co.uk

Congratulations to the Citizens' who swept the boards at the nominations for the Critics Awards for Theatre in Scotland 2006 for their production of Molly Sweeny. Nominated in 3 of the most prestigious categories; Best Production, Best Female Performance (Cara Kelly) and Best Director (Gregory Thompson). It is a double nomination for Gregory Thompson, who has also been shortlisted in the Best Director category of the 2006 TMA (Theatre Management Association) awards.

Reviews
Death Disco featuring Blackstrobe
Live @ The Arches, Glasgow, Saturday 19th August
By David Bratchpiece (Box Office Assistant, The Arches)
"Death Disco has quickly established itself as one of Glasgow’s most popular club nights, by providing an ever-eclectic mix of open minded DJ sets, acts that are just as at home playing in live music venues as well as nightclubs, and offering a launchpad for some of Scotland’s finest homegrown talent.
August’s revelry proved this rule, with well over a thousand clubbers putting their dancing shoes to good use during the month. Resident DJ Jill Mingo was no exception, bouncing up and down behind the technics for the duration of her typically varied set. In the top arch, up and coming Glasgow based boy/girl duo The Manhattan Project opened the night with some bone-shakingly funky electro, before handing over the decks to Optimo supremo Twitch.
Highlight of the night, though (apart from the flamboyant drag queens strutting their feather boa clad stuff) was the mighty Blackstrobe, who took to the stage to thunderous applause. Their set was a pumped up mixture of thumping beats and live instrumentation, and didn’t disappoint. The only criticism perhaps being that it did become a tad repetitive after a while, but this didn’t seem to affect the crowd’s appreciation of the French boffins. Maybe this reviewer was just a wee bit too drunk.
All in all, a fun and hassle free night, and one that bodes well for the future of the third Saturday of every month in The Arches."
For detail of the next Death Disco event and other club nights at the Arches, check out the Arches website.

Scotland's Broadway
Working in close partnership with Glasgow City Marketing Bureau, the Ambassador Theatre Group (ATG) has announced Scotland’s Broadway, a major new initiative to increase visitor numbers to the city. Scotland’s Broadway has been designed to closely complement and support the already highly successful Glasgow: Scotland with Style campaign. Officially launched at a glittering Guys and Dolls opening night party in September, the initiative is backed by a substantial marketing drive carrying the message to both domestic and international markets, including the Ambassador Theatre Group’s four million-strong London and South East customer database. Glasgow’s two major theatres already attract around 600,000 attendances per year, with just under half of these coming from visitors to the city.

One night a customer said to me...
At last year's 7:84 Theatre Company production of Northern Ireland political thriller Borderlands at the Tron Theatre, a young audience member was overheard telling her pal: "Oh my god, I pure shat masel."
Sadly it was too late to include this winning endoresement on the posters!

Tramway time team discover capsule
When a section of roof on the B-listed Victorian facade of the Tramway complex collapsed, workers involved in its demolition made a surprise discovery - a time capsule hidden inside the building. The copper box - about 40 cm wide by 25 cm tall - contained reports from the Glasgow Corporation Clerk of Works concerning the construction of what was then known as the Coplawhill Stables.
They showed that the entire building cost £27,018, 14 shillings and six pence to put up. Also included in the time capsule were copies of The Glasgow Herald - which cost a penny - and the now-defunct Glasgow Evening News, slightly cheaper at half-pence. Both papers were dated Thursday 5 October 1893. The papers will be examined by archivists at the Mitchell Library before a final decision is made on if and where they should be displayed.
