The announcement of this year's shortlists for the Critics Awards for Theatres in Scotland (CATS) sees the National Theatre of Scotland's opening productions picking up 11 nominations across seven of the award's ten categories alongside productions at The Arches and the Citizens' Theatre.
Unveiling the shortlists Robert Dawson Scott, Convenor of CATS, said: "The first few months of the National Theatre of Scotland have proved to be both a popular and critical success. It is in line with its innovative model that all its nominations are the result of partnerships and co-productions with the existing talent pool. Once again we were struck by the quality of work being produced across the country, from Shetland to East Lothian and from large and small companies."
The ten winners will be announced and presented in a celebration and ceremony at The Discovery Centre in Dundee on the 6th of June, 2006.

AMA/Network: Mapping Training Needs and Provision
A key recommendation from a recent feasibility study undertaken by Audience Data UK (ADUK) concluded that training should be provided to “address the issues of competency and enable and encourage information usage.” This relates both to the set-up and use of box-office systems as well as the consistent and accurate usage and interpretation of standard data reports. As industry leaders, AMA/Network have created a joint partnership to develop a programme of training to address this need and recently commissioned GGA to undertake a training needs analysis and map current provision.
Supporting Touring Companies
The Federation of Scottish Theatre (FST), GGA and The Audience Business (TAB) are committed to supporting touring companies and the venues that they perform in to maximise attendance. The three companies are working together on a long-term project to support capacity building in touring companies and venues to ensure the delivery of strategic and sustainable audience development throughout Scotland. A wealth of information and research has been collated over the past five years and GGA and TAB are currently reviewing this research and assessing the potential theatre audience using Area Profile Reports and depth interviews.
Shop the Arts Experience in Glasgow
GGA is currently developing an innovative audience development initiative that will aim to engage more people in the arts. The campaign will not only motivate regular and non attenders to experience the arts, but also highlight potential performance improvements at arts and culture venues across Glasgow and the west of Scotland. We are receiving an overwhelmingly positive response to the project from the groups we have met so far. Stage two will involve short telephone interviews with venue staff across the city. Contact isla@gga4arts.co.uk for more details.
C21 Service: Raising the Game
GGA has gathered together key influencers within Glasgow box office and front of house teams. The group unanimously expressed their support for continuing the drive to promote C21 Service amongst front line staff in arts venues across the city. Backing was given to two key initiatives – a Training Needs Analysis survey for box office, front of house and marketing staff and the Arts Pass - a unique concept that will allow staff to benefit from exclusive ticket offers at venues across the city as well as networking and professional development opportunities. The team will meet again next month to move the initiatives to the next stage towards launch. Watch this space…
Eastwood Theatre
GGA is working with East Renfrewshire Council's Arts Team in the run up to the re-opening of Eastwood Theatre in early 2007, following major refurbishment. The current local audience is being profiled to offer guidance on potential growth areas using existing ticketing data and Area Profile Reports. Focus groups are also being undertaken to inform brand development.
GRCH, RSNO and SCO
GGA has recently distributed the first round of reports as part of the Audience Data Exchange (ADX) to users. The reports contain real audience information about attendances at a venue over a period of time. The Glasgow Royal Concert Hall (GRCH) and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra (RSNO) are working together with GGA to further analyse classical music audiences using the software and will examine attendances for individual orchestras. The Scottish Chamber Orchestra (SCO) is also assessing similar data specific to its Orchestra. In addition to this, GGA is analysing the lifestyle and demographics of current SCO attenders, recommending potential ‘areas’ to target and producing a tactical plan aimed at reaching new audiences.

Feedback from the workshop:
“A good way to ensure that access issues remain paramount in all aspects of an organisation's operation.”
“It was useful to know that if I do need further help and advice that I am clearer on where I can go to get support.”
“Today will not only help in relation to my job but throughout my life.”

The Stages of Youth Report
A new study claims children as young as four know their brands better than their ABC. Even before they start school, youngsters are more inclined to name a particular brand. The study of four different age groups showed that the average six to eight year old has between £6 and £7 a week to spend on whatever they want. The 13 to 15 years age group is even more aware of what brands are cool and can have as much as £30 a week to spend.

Population Stats
Scotland's population has risen for the third year in a row to 5,094,800. The population growth has been attributed to the effects of people settling in Scotland from the rest of the UK and overseas. East Dunbartonshire and West Dunbartonshire experienced the largest population falls at 0.6%.
Official statistics for Glasgow show that in 2001 the population was 577,869, down from 606,651 in 1991. It is estimated to fall to 564,822 by 2014.

The Office of the Scottish Charity regulator (OSCR) was officially launched in Edinburgh last month to an impressive audience of over 750 charities. Set up as an independent regulator and registrar of Scottish charities, OSCR aims to create an environment in which charities can flourish and in which the public can have trust and confidence. OSCR will oversee the rules to ensure only genuine charitable groups can benefit from public donations. Scotland's 20,000 charities will be required to pass a test to prove they fulfill a charitable purpose and that they provide a public benefit. For more details log on to the OSCR website.

This month's highlighted supplier: Design Company - D8
"Super" is an overused word. It has been hijacked by the middle classes for their own dirty purposes. This generally involves phrases like "super shot Hamish" or "what a super spread Susan and Jonathan put on last night, it was divine." d8 think this is wrong so we're thinking about reclaiming it by calling ourselves superd8.
